FAQ

About the Inn:

Where is The Fat Cat Inn?
We are situated on the hill overlooking Swan Lake in Vernon BC.

Is The Fat Cat Inn secure?
Yes! We have a company monitor our alarm system as well as cameras inside, and out in the courtyard. Find more about our safety and security implementation here.

What does the Inn provide for my cat?
We provide bedding and blankets, litter (pine pellets), litter pan, bowls and toys and endless amounts of cuddles and playtime.

Can I come view the Inn before I book my cat’s holiday?
Yes! We highly recommend a visit to see our Inn first! It will set your mind at ease and we will get to meet each other. These are scheduled by appointment only. We want to give you as much time as you need with us for viewing and questions. Contact us for a viewing!

Is someone on premises at night?
Yes. The Inn is a residence as well, so it is tended to in the mornings and late afternoon to evenings. Every day is different based on tasks required. Physical contact with the Inn is about 8-10 hours, similar to what your cat experiences at home.

Wouldn’t it be better if I have someone come to my house when I vacation?
Not necessarily. Cats do much better emotionally when they are taken out of their home environment and cared for elsewhere rather than taking their human out of their home. Replacing you with a stranger or someone who will not perform the rituals you would for your cat can cause stress for them.  Often behaviour issues arise and unpleasant accidents can greet you upon arriving home.

Will my cat be happy at The Fat Cat Inn?
We certainly hope so! We have found that a majority of cats do incredibly well in a boarding environment. We believe that it’s because we have put a lot of attention into creating a stress-free environment with a cat’s needs in mind. We’ve thought about all of the things that bring a cat joy – attention, playing, lounging, climbing, scratching, and eating, and of course… sleeping.

I don’t drive, can you pick up?
Yes! We will pick up your cat for a small mileage fee. We also have a complimentary pick up location near Butcher Boys.

I have more than one cat. Can they stay in the same suite?
Yes, our suites are designed to house one or two cats. We also have adjoining suites to accommodate more that 2 cats in a family.

I have two cats that have different diets. Do I need to reserve two suites?
Yes. Although we can monitor food consumption during the day, we cannot do so at night.

How do I get updates on how my cat is settling in while we are away?
We would love to connect with you while you are away! Text, call, What’s-App, FB Messenger, Instagram DM, email etc. You won’t be bothering us! Once a line of communication is set up by you, feel free to ask for updates, photos or video and we will get them out ASAP!

Can I visit my cat while they board?
After years of caring for cats, we have observed behavioural patterns, and have concluded that visits generally benefit the human but can be consequential to your cat. Visits interrupt their adjustment to their new environment, forcing some cats into a yo-yo effect. After visiting with their humans, some skip meals and show other signs of stress because their human left again. Due to this, we discourage visits. This way, when your cat sees you again, they are rewarded with going home. We love happy reunions!

Do I get a refund if my trip is cut short?
There are no refunds or credits for unused days of a reservation for coming home early.

Are there any limitations around what cats can or cannot stay?
We ask that guests have had all vaccinations completed with a certificate presented to verify this. This is for the safety of your own cat and for others.
– Cats with chronically medicated illnesses that are managed can visit.
– We welcome little kittens that have been vaccinated.
– Sick cats without a diagnosed medical condition can not stay until illness is diagnosed and managed.
– No un-spayed or un-neutered cats with the exception of kittens under 6 months.
– No open wounds or stitches.
– Your cat must be litter trained.
– No compulsive sprayers.
– A visual health check will be done at check in. If your cat is a chronic sneezer, they will need a vet confirmation of no illness before checking in.

Entertainment:

Can I bring my cat’s favourite toy?
Of course! We want to make sure your cat feels at home, so anything you want to bring that will help them enjoy their stay is more than welcome. Whether it’s their favourite small blanket, a nice soft brush, a cuddly toy, or the beloved Amazon box used to deliver said cuddly toy, we will ensure it is incorporated into their suite and our interaction time with them. We also provide our own toys and blankets to help make their suite as cozy as possible.
*Please note that we cannot be held responsible for any personal items that are damaged or go missing during your cat’s stay. To avoid any mix ups of items going home with the wrong guest, please label any belongings that are able to be labelled.

What type of exercise is provided?
Every morning and evening, playtime shifts are had by all the visitors that want to participate on an individual or family basis. This includes toys, indoor tree climbing, catnip zoomies etc. Unattended (aside from security cameras) and over-night time out is rotated. We have attempted booking one on one yoga classes in the past, but unfortunately our guests would rather climb and lounge on the instructor.

What kind of toys do you provide?
The bottomless toy chest at The Fat Cat Inn has plenty of ways to occupy and entertain your curious cat. We use laser pointers, string, balls, feathers, springy toys, catnip toys, toys that can be loaded with treats and encouraging the brave to climb our indoor tree. We explore your cat’s appetite for play, and choose the toys and activities that are most fun for them!

Health and Well-Being:

Do you administer medications?
Yes! We are happy to administer many types of medications to cats that will allow a stranger to do so, such as friendly, non-aggressive cats. Insulin injections, pills, inhalers and topicals are $2 per dose. We do not administer sub-Q fluids. If meds are to be inserted into food, we do not charge for this.

Do I have to supply my own food?
Yes, to avoid any upset tummies, we request that you please bring their own food and favourite treats. We welcome a ‘special snack’ that may comfort them in the first day or two of settling in. Generally, cats are fed on a twice daily basis, however, we can cater to your cat’s schedule if required. We have a fridge and freezer for raw diets as well.

My cat is very old, can they stay at the Inn?
Yes, and possibly no. If your cat is over 17 with medical conditions, they will need to have a vet visit to clear them to board with us. With senior cats, their hydration and stress levels are of utmost importance as the health of a geriatric cat can go south within an extremely short time, hours even. If your cat is elderly and not a well eater, the best option for your cat is Vet boarding or having someone your cat is familiar with come to your house. Our main concern is your cat. Their potential stress levels can send them off their food and water even more. This is a sure trip to the vets while in boarding care, which could potentially end up being a very expensive holiday for you.

What if my cat is unwell during their stay?
We will talk to you about any ongoing medical conditions or medications that your cat is taking prior to their stay to ensure that we can properly cater to their needs. Should your cat become ill or contagious during their stay, we will attempt to contact you and your emergency contact and take your cat to the veterinarian for care.

What if I have a nervous cat?
Not a problem, we pride ourselves at The Fat Cat Inn for our patience, care and expertise in making all our guests feel relaxed, special and cared for. Even the most nervous cat will settle in no time at all. We use FELIWAY diffusers (veterinary used and recommended) in all suites for when guests arrive. These mimic a pheromone which help cats naturally cope with stressful situations and help provide a contented environment for your cat while restoring feelings of safety and well-being. Plus, a little tasty catnip, yummy treats and cozy cuddles – if they allow – will have them relaxing in no time at all.

What if my cat isn’t good with other cats?
This is probably our most common question? Not to worry! There is no cat-to-cat interactions outside of existing family. Under no circumstances will we put stranger cats together, ever.

How do you clean the suite before my cat arrives?
Very meticulously. First, the entire suite is emptied and swept of hair and litter and all surfaces are sprayed and wiped with pet-safe cleaner. The entire suite is then sprayed with the same sterilizing solution your vet uses in between patients. Once that is dry, we use pet-safe window cleaner so they can enjoy the view, streak and nose print free. Then we re-fill the room with laundered bedding, a fresh litter box with litter and clean dishes.

If you have any other questions, please get in touch, we would love to hear them!
